The following are sample rates. An excerpt must be viewed before working out a final quote, and rates are open to negotiation.
- Proofread/light copyedit: $25/hour, with an average speed of 10–20 pages/hour
- Medium copyedit: $30–$35/hour
- Heavy copyedit or line edit (may include substantive and/or developmental editing): $50/hour
It all depends on the amount of errors and the "heaviness" of your material, of course, but I am generally a fairly speedy editor. Let's say you need a light edit on a 250-page Word document (standard double spacing, 1-inch margins, and 12-point Times New Roman font). You can expect me to have it done in 10–15 hours, tops.* But before I even get started, I will provide you with my estimated fee and we will make sure we're on the same page with time and cost expectations.
(Need a better idea of what makes an edit light, medium, or heavy? See here.)
*That's 10–15 hours of editing, not a promise that I will send it back to you in 10–15 hours. Actual turnaround depends on my current editing workload. If you have a specific deadline, let me know and I will work accordingly.
